“You hear it in complete sentences?” I couldn’t believe what this animal communicator was saying. From a town a hundred miles away, she was talking to my dog and hearing her back in complete sentences.
“Yes, that’s the way I hear them, or else I get pictures or feel something.”
And that began the reading of Jane Heath’s communication with Wheatie. I had expected that this woman from Helena, Montana, would be telling me things like, “I sense that . . .” or “I feel like she is telling me . . .” You know, the usual thing you hear from folks who say they are psychic and tell you things that are utter nonsense.
But, no, Jane was saying things that fit my dog’s shy and frightened personality. She gave me concrete things to do to help Wheatie recover from past trauma. And most amazing, Wheatie’s whole personality changed in days.
My partner, John, and I had many questions about Wheatie’s abusive past, but mostly we were wondering how to stop her from chasing deer in our yard. A doe had almost killed her when she got too close to a fawn. So frightened by the incident, Wheatie would not go out of the house for two days. For two more days she would not go off the porch. On the fifth day this 14-pound fluffy white Bichon Frise-cross started chasing the deer with a vengeance. I could not call her off.
As are most people who call an animal communicator, I was desperate for help. I could not imagine what was going through her head to make her chase the deer after being so frightened.
Wheatie told Jane she was chasing deer to protect me. She had seen how the doe turned on me when I rushed out to help her. Jane told her that the best way to protect me was to stay next to me. For the rest of her life, she seldom chased the deer. But if she just couldn’t help herself and took off, the only way we could bring her back was by shouting, “No, Wheatie, remember what Jane said. Stay next to me.” She would stop and come back to us. And we would worry that the neighbors thought we were nuts calling the dog in complete sentences.
But what a remarkable change happened. By being told that we loved her and would take care of her for life, this timid little abused stray began to come out of her shell and actually blossom. I watched her bloom for two years then decided I had to see if I could do what Jane did.
“Can I learn to do that,” I asked her, “or do you have to be born with the ability?”
“Oh, no,” she replied. “In fact, the teacher is coming in May.” I signed up for the May 2001 class not knowing what to expect.
It was a fantastic weekend. I was encouraged with the results I got during class practice sessions. Funny, I thought, many of the things I have done in the past have prepared me so well for this. I had been meditating for about 20 years at that point, and I used to be a newspaper reporter. So neither calming down nor taking notes as I listened to the animals was difficult at all. I used some of my Hospice training with an animal at the class who was quite ill. My counseling training and eight years of private practice helped in literally counseling the animals through their behavior problems. Later I found that a bit of Search and Rescue training also came in handy in trying to find lost animals. Hmm—such coincidences.
The more I practiced with friends’ animals and got correct verifiable information, the more I wanted to know what exactly I was doing in communicating with the animals. I read dozens of books about telepathy and psychic phenomena. Then one day, while talking to a friend’s deceased dog, I had a feeling that my deceased cousin was with me. I heard his unmistakable laugh.
“You were wondering,” I heard Doug say, “if you could talk to spirits, and I am here to tell you, ‘Yes, you can.’” Indeed, that very morning I had been wondering about talking to spirits. But it was a shock to be communicating with him. I finished with him, finished with the deceased dog, finished with another dog, and then I burst into tears and made an appointment with a psychologist.
“I think that I’m okay. I think it is something else,” I told her, “but your job is to make sure that I am not becoming schizophrenic.” We both decided in a few months that I still seemed normal enough.
But what is this that animal communicators do? Technically, it is mental telepathy between the animal and me. I don’t begin to presume that I know how it works or why. I only know that once I get quiet, call in the animal by name or description, I just get a feeling—a sense—that he or she is listening.
I seem to be most adept at hearing the animals (clairaudience). Sometimes I will see a picture (clairvoyance) that I then describe. Sometimes I just know the answer as soon as I ask the question (clairknowing or claircognizance). Or I can ask the animal to let me feel how he or she feels (clairsentience).
I now am in a profession that is controversial. Some people tell me to my face that I am crazy. Some tell me it’s a gift from God. Many believe that it is an ability that all people have but don’t know how to access. Others have told me that I am talking to Satan and will go to hell. I have worked hard to get to a place where I now possess a strong sense of my own beliefs and sanity. I know that this work is helpful to the animals and their humans. I believe in the goodness of helping all of God’s creatures in any way I can, even if it is just by the way I hear them.
