The Three-Legged Dog

Posted on September 20, 2024September 20, 2024 by Carolee Nelson-Hall

Nothing fills my heart more with overarching hope than a three-legged dog. I kinda want to know the dog’s story of tragedy/rescue, yet I prefer it to be an anonymous story, like the billions of personal stories of tragedy/rescue we never get to hear. These hidden stories are everywhere, I am sure.

Sometimes these stories need to be shared, yet the real miracle is the three-legged dog. He lives on. He is still loved and valued, and he does not seek pity. He glows with diamond quality resilience.

None of us can rescue ourselves, especially from our tragedies. We need each other . . . desperately. That’s the only way we can make it. That is how the dog made it.

Hope inflates my heart and spirit when I see the three- legged dog. I send him an Olympic “bravo” with my eyes.

“Can I pet your dog?” tumbles out of my mouth before I can catch myself.

“No, not today” is the answer. That is okay. My hope bucket is filled. I may have filled the dog’s hope bucket as well.

Thank you for giving me insight into looking at tragedy and seeing resilience instead of defeat.

Indeed, an admirable journey supported by resilience strengthened through support of others.

Oh Carolee, Yes! I too am in the wonderment boat when I see a dog gallantly existing with only three limbs. Still able to live life large, no need for pity.
Your stories are always deep, thought provoking treasures. I often find myself thinking of them long after they have been shared. You are a wonderfully gifted writer!

Love Carolee and her very kind heart that comes through in her writing and in her loving presence. And, who couldn’t love this dog!
